My Top Five: Hawaiian Food

Hawaii is known for the great variety of its local food.  Hawaiian food was mainly street food, while it is now recognized as a cuisine. There are many kinds of food you can find in Hawaii, but it is my top five list.

1. Makiki Fried Chicken

They serve fried chicken with gravy on the side and rice or macaroni salad on top. It is well known for being served at Hawaiian BBQ restaurants and KFC locations.

2. Kalua Pork

Kalua pork is made using traditional cooking methods that Native Hawaiians demonstrated. The pig is placed in a hole dug into the earth and wrapped in banana leaves.

After it has cooked for 20 to 24 hours, the pig is removed from the hole, cooled, and then pulled apart by hand.  It is commonly served at Hawaiian BBQ restaurants.

3. Poi

Poi is made from pounding taro root into a paste-like consistency, mixed with water, and strained before serving. It is made at home as a staple family food.

The poi paste is often served with various toppings such as Hawaiian fish cakes and anything else you might crave, like rice and macaroni salad.  It is best eaten around midnight when the moon is complete to bring good luck.

4. Loco Moco

Loco moco was initially a hamburger served at the original Hawaii Five O. It is now referred to as the signature dish of Hawaii Five O restaurants.
